Vashon Center for the Arts, 19600 Vashon Highway SW, Vashon, WA 98070

In this concert, the Vashon Island Chorale looks to the future of choral music. Thanks to a generous donation from Jo Ann and Tom Bardeen, the Chorale has commissioned Giselle Wyers to compose a new major work titled Legacy. The various texts were chosen because they highlight different aspects of the legacy that an individual can leave behind to the world. Wyers’s sumptuous, melodic, resonant, warm style is a perfect match for this theme and for the Chorale. We are thrilled to bring this new work into the world as part of the Chorale’s own legacy.

The concert will also commemorate Vashon’s musical legacy in other ways, including a work by the late Buzz Brusletten and the Tin Pan Alley song, Vashon Island Moon. We also turn to the tunes of the Shaker religion, popular in the nineteenth century but now almost extinct. Kevin Siegfried’s Shaker Songs reveal their contemplative wonder and beauty. If any tradition has left an enduring musical legacy, surely it is the Shakers. Here is an occasion to reflect and rejoice in the various legacies we can all enjoy.
