Past Concerts

  • In this concert we presented a program of all Pacific Northwest composers with choral pieces on a winter theme, including the world premieres of works by Aaron Giles (Masters in this hall), John Michael Paulson (little tree), and Calvin Rice (Spellbound). Sharing the program are compositions by Giselle Wyers (After the Winter), Peter Siebert (Out upon the lonely road), Karen Thomas (O little town of Bethlehem), Bronwyn Edwards (Christmas Boats), Reginald Unterseher (Christmas Joy!), and Morten Lauridsen (O magnum mysterium), PNW composers all. Also in the concert, the McMurray Choir sang, “Remembering Decembers” by PinkZebra.

  • Highlights include Eric Whitacre’s “Water Night” and the acclaimed settings of James Agee’s “Sure on this shining night” by Samuel Barber and Morten Lauridsen. Arrangements by Aaron Copland of traditional American tunes join William Averitt’s dramatic and optimistic “The Song We Sing.” “At the Water’s Edge,” a suite by Kevin Seigfried on texts of Sarah Orne Jewett, reflects on a Maine seaside village, just as Bronwyn Edwards’s “Seashore” depicts the coast of our own Vashon Island.

  • Vashon Island Chorale celebrates the 150th birthday of the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. His “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” has been a favorite for over a century, and his less-well-known “Benedicite” provides suitable panache. Amid shorter, seasonally appropriate Vaughan Williams works, we’ll also present music by his two dear friends, Gustav Holst and Gerald Finzi, including the latter’s Christmas scene, “In terra pax.”
